A staged factory rollout
Dongfeng plans to move its Xiaodong humanoid into factory training by the end of October, followed by trial production before the end of 2026 and small-batch production in 2027. The timetable comes from Zhang Zhenlin, the automaker's chief engineer for intelligent technology. These are planned milestones rather than completed deployments.
The original Changjiang Daily report, republished by Hubei's industry department, identifies sorting, material handling and quality inspection as intended factory jobs. It also describes a separate quadruped, Yuanzai, intended for tours, sales assistance and inspections, with dealership deployment planned for November.
Why the automaker is developing more than one body
Zhang said Dongfeng participates in the robot's higher-level control design while Huazhong University of Science and Technology works on lower-level control. The company is exploring a shared intelligence system across different robot forms, including possible wheeled machines for specialized work.
This makes the factory task more informative than the humanoid appearance. Moving a component between known locations, recognizing the correct part and inspecting its quality impose different requirements. A successful deployment must connect perception and movement with the factory's instructions, timing and safety procedures.
What the next milestone needs to demonstrate
Dongfeng's stated advantage is access to its own factories, dealerships and campuses. That can provide places to train and test machines against recurring tasks. It also creates a way to compare a robot's performance with the process already in use.
The report offers no measured task-success rate, intervention frequency or per-unit cost. Zhang's prediction that robots could match and later surpass human efficiency should therefore remain an ambition. Factory training will be a stronger test than a public demonstration because production must continue reliably when parts, lighting or operating conditions change.
