ENGINEAI chief executive Zhao Tongyang says a general-purpose humanoid capable of practical work can now cost less than RMB 100,000 per unit, compared with more than RMB 1 million three years earlier. IT Home reported the remarks from a media interview at the World Robot Conference, citing Blue Whale Technology.

Zhao distinguished the machines he was discussing from inexpensive toy robots. The account does not identify a complete bill of materials, a specific configuration or an independently audited production-cost comparison.

Component prices are part of the explanation

The report attributes the decline to improvements in China's component supply chain. Zhao cited falling prices for ball screws and reducers, while noting that suppliers still need experience to meet precision requirements. These are his descriptions of the market, rather than a published price index covering the industry.

Cheaper components can lower the cost of building a machine. They do not necessarily reduce the work needed to integrate, calibrate and maintain it. Manufacturing yield also matters: a low component price is less useful if a significant share of assemblies require rework.

What the number means for a potential user

Production cost and the price paid by a customer are different measures. A delivered system may include software, training, installation, support and spare parts. Its operating economics also depend on how much useful work it performs and how often a person must intervene.

The claim is therefore a signal to watch in the supply chain, not a quotation for a ready-to-use employee replacement. A more complete assessment would connect an exact robot model and job to purchase price, support requirements and demonstrated output. That would show whether lower hardware costs are turning into a lower cost per completed task.
