Report: Alibaba is developing a Qwen-powered workplace device

A reported prototype for office work

Alibaba Cloud's Wuying team is developing QwenBook, a tablet-like device intended to put an AI agent at the center of office work, DoNews reported, citing LatePost. The project reportedly began around April and remains an early experiment. Alibaba has not provided a public retail specification or price in the reporting reviewed here.

The report puts the team at roughly 150 people, drawing software staff from Wuying and Alibaba Cloud's operating-system group and hardware recruits from phone manufacturers. It says the prototype connects to Qwen3.8-Max and Qwen3.8-Flash, with Kingsoft cooperation intended to bring WPS into the workflow.

A demonstration is not a shipping product

According to DoNews, the version planned for the Apsara Conference exposes only part of the product concept. A more complete release is expected in late 2026 or early 2027. That is reported planning, not an announced delivery commitment.

TechNode separately lists meeting transcription, a wiki, smart folders, email, MyNote and MyZone among the proposed system applications. Those functions suggest a device organized around ongoing documents and tasks, rather than a single chat window. Whether they share context reliably is an implementation question that cannot be answered from a prototype description.

The practical test is the workflow

The cloud-computer element adds another question: which operations execute locally, which require a remote session, and what remains usable offline? The reports do not establish that boundary. Battery life, service subscriptions, account requirements and access outside China are also still undisclosed. For now, QwenBook is evidence of product development inside Alibaba, not a tablet that overseas buyers can evaluate or order.
