China's daily AI token calls exceeded 500 trillion by June 2026, according to a September 11 Ministry of Industry and Information Technology briefing. That official statement corroborates the figure reported in August and gives the claim a direct government source.

A September article carried by the Digital China Summit website provides the chronology behind the jump: 30 trillion daily tokens by June 2025, 100 trillion by the end of 2025 and more than 140 trillion in March 2026. The 30-trillion and 500-trillion figures refer to different years, so they are not contradictory estimates for the same month.

What the unit captures

A token is a unit of text or other model input and output as represented by a model's tokenizer. It is not the same as a user, a question or a completed job. A long document can contribute many input tokens, while an agent can make several model calls as it searches, reasons and revises an answer.

This means rapidly rising token traffic is consistent with more intensive use of AI even when the number of people using it grows more slowly. It can also reflect longer contexts and multi-step workflows. The aggregate statistic does not separate these mechanisms or show how much of the traffic produced a useful final result.

A demand signal with limits

The official figure is relevant to inference demand: serving repeated model calls requires computing and memory capacity beyond the one-time process of training a model. But token totals do not translate into a fixed number of chips. Different architectures, precision formats, batching arrangements and cache-hit rates can serve the same number of tokens with different resource costs.

Nor does token growth alone establish commercial revenue. Free calls, discounted services and paid enterprise workloads can all contribute usage. The verified news is the scale and chronology of the reported traffic; the economic interpretation requires separate evidence about pricing, utilization and the mix of workloads.
