Tencent Retires QClaw AI Assistant, Consolidates Around WorkBuddy

Shutdown Timeline and User Options

Tencent announced on September 24 that QClaw, its OpenClaw-based local AI assistant, will cease operations at 00:00 on December 24, 2026. Effective immediately from the announcement date, the service no longer accepts new user registrations or subscription purchases and renewals. Users who had enabled auto-renewal will see billing stop automatically without manual cancellation.

Existing registered users and paid subscribers retain full access until the December cutoff. After that date, only data backup and migration functions remain available. Users can sign in to the latest QClaw client through March 24, 2027 to download previously created backups. After that deadline, Tencent says it will delete all user data except where retention is required by law.

For users with unused paid subscriptions or point packs, Tencent has opened a refund application channel. Points already in user accounts remain valid under their original expiration terms regardless of the shutdown.

Migration Path to WorkBuddy

Tencent is positioning WorkBuddy as the successor destination for QClaw users. The company has built a two-step migration process: first, users authorize account linking and select data scopes on the QClaw website, logging into or registering a personal-edition WorkBuddy account; second, they execute the transfer inside the QClaw client using a dedicated WorkBuddy migration assistant that processes the authorized data.

Users who complete both account authorization and an actual data migration receive a 1,000-point WorkBuddy subsidy valid for one month, regardless of whether they previously used WorkBuddy. For migrating users making their first-ever WorkBuddy membership purchase, Tencent adds tiered bonuses: 500 points for the standard monthly plan, 1,000 for premium, and 5,000 for flagship. These bonus points are credited within seven business days of purchase.

Consolidation Behind the Shutdown

A Tencent spokesperson told 21st Century Business Herald that the shutdown is a business development adjustment intended to further integrate resources to provide better Agent services. The company emphasized that users can continue normal service until the December cutoff and that the WorkBuddy migration tool is already operational.

The decision caps a series of internal moves pointing toward consolidation. In July, Tencent transferred QClaw's product center and part of its team into Cloud Products Department Six, the unit that houses WorkBuddy. Around the same time, QClaw lead Zhang Shuyu departed the company; she stated publicly that QClaw and WorkBuddy shared the same manager and overlapping growth staff, denying reports of an internal horse race between the two products.

During Tencent's second-quarter earnings call, Chief Strategy Officer James Mitchell said the company had significantly increased funding for WorkBuddy after observing explosive growth, while simultaneously compressing marketing budgets for other AI products. A September 20 report from Frost & Sullivan, cited by 21st Century Business Herald, ranked WorkBuddy first in both China's consumer and enterprise desktop AI agent categories.

QClaw was developed by Tencent's PC Manager team on the open-source OpenClaw framework and entered testing in March. The product supported WeChat-based remote control of desktop tasks including file organization, complex task execution and multi-scenario workflows across office, creative and development use cases.
