THE ESSENTIALS
  • The university report describes a research design rather than an available hair-coloring product.

An AI and biology design

Huazhong University of Science and Technology has described a student project that combines AI-assisted enzyme screening with natural pigment biosynthesis and programmable color fading. In an October 23 report, its School of Life Science and Technology said the HUST-LifeST team's “Mr. Tony” project won a gold medal and the best education and science communication award at the first AI and synthetic biology innovation competition.

The final took place at Tianjin University on October 16. The university's account presents the technical approach and the students' interdisciplinary work; the award was received a week before the report was published.

A proposed research pathway

The project proposes using microbial cell factories to produce natural pigments including indigo, curcumin and lycopene. It also designs a xylose-responsive gene regulation system to support controllable fading, according to the school.

The team combined AI computational analysis, biological experimental validation, social research and science education. The report positions the approach as a possible direction for future biological hair-coloring technology, and does not establish a commercially available product or independently verified safety benefits.
