Permission for operational testing
XPeng said in an October 26 company announcement that it has obtained Guangzhou's qualification for intelligent connected vehicle demonstration operations, allowing Level 4 Robotaxi demonstrations across the city. The company described the permission as a step from technical validation toward testing operations and business models. It did not give the permit's exact approval date.
Access will initially continue through invitation codes, with the service area expanding gradually under safety controls. XPeng said the work will test order handling, vehicle dispatch, passenger pickup and drop-off, service processes and responses to abnormal situations. The qualification should therefore be read as permission for demonstration operations; the announcement does not establish a profitable service or unrestricted public availability.
Technology supplier strategy
XPeng said its longer-term role is to supply vehicle platforms, autonomous-driving software and AI capabilities to partners, with local partners handling fleet operations. It identified hardware sales, technical services and commissions as intended revenue sources. Experience in Guangzhou is meant to help refine a replicable operating model for other markets. Those commercial outcomes remain company objectives.
